Ouch, Anandtech tested the GPU accelerated desktop (Aero) against XP, Vista Aero, Vista Basic, and Vista Classic, and their corrosponding CPU usage. If their results are correct, I'd suggest sticking with Aero. It was done by opening several windows overlapping each other in different places on the desktop and moving one around.
XP - 49% Vista Aero - 33% Vista Basic - 97% Vista Classic - 78%
